What are custom varsity jackets?
Custom varsity jackets, also called letterman jackets, are wool-blend body jackets with contrast raglan sleeves, ribbed collar and cuffs, and snap fronts, decorated with chenille patches and embroidered lettering. Schools, teams, and clubs order them in bulk, with a free mockup before production.
About custom varsity jackets
A varsity jacket is the only piece of merch a student is likely to keep for thirty years, and that changes how it should be ordered. It is not a giveaway or a season's spirit wear; it is a record of belonging to something, which is why the details that date badly, an oversized graphic, a trendy colour, a year printed too large, are the ones to avoid rather than lean into.
We build custom varsity jackets on the traditional construction: a wool-blend melton body, contrast raglan sleeves, ribbed knit collar, cuffs, and hem, and a snap front. Decoration runs to chenille patches for the primary letter or mascot and embroidery for names, years, and secondary marks, which is the combination that reads as a real letterman jacket rather than an imitation of one.
Schools order them for senior classes, athletic programs, and honour societies; clubs and Greek organizations order them for chapters; and companies occasionally order them for milestone recognition. Runs are produced as a single made-to-order batch with a free mockup before anything is cut.
Delivered per-unit pricing for custom varsity jackets runs about $60–$120 at 50, $53–$104 at 100, and $47–$91 at 250 or more, with standard US shipping to one address included at every tier.
Best for
- Senior class jackets and graduating-year programs
- Athletic teams, letter winners, and booster club programs
- Student organizations, honour societies, and Greek chapters
- Milestone and long-service recognition for companies
Chenille patches and embroidered lettering
The chenille patch is what makes a varsity jacket a varsity jacket. It is a raised, looped-yarn letter or mascot, usually in the school's primary colour on a contrasting felt backing, and it is the element people recognize from across a room. Most orders put one large patch on the left chest and, where the program has one, a second on the back or the sleeve.
Everything else, names, graduating years, sport or role titles, runs in embroidery. Embroidered lettering sits flat, survives decades of wear, and can be personalized per jacket at no structural change to the order, so a run of fifty jackets can carry fifty different names. The convention is a name on the right chest opposite the patch and a year on a sleeve, though plenty of programs do it differently and we will lay out whatever you want in the mockup.
One piece of advice worth taking: keep the year smaller than feels natural. A jacket that shouts its year reads as a costume a decade later, while the same jacket with a discreet year still gets worn.
Sizing a varsity jacket order
Varsity jackets are cut roomier than a hoodie because they are made to layer over one, and the ribbed hem sits at the natural waist rather than below it. Most people take their normal size; someone who wants to wear it over a thick hoodie should size up one. Because the body is a structured wool blend rather than a stretchy knit, a jacket that is too small does not simply feel snug, it does not close comfortably.
For a class or team order, collect sizes properly rather than estimating from a roster. A varsity jacket is expensive enough per piece that a wrong size is a real problem, and unlike a tee it cannot be handed to someone else and quietly replaced. Our group size calculator gives a starting distribution, and the size guide has the measurements to share before the order form goes out.
Names and years are locked at the point of embroidery, so collect those alongside sizes in the same form. Changing one after production has started means a new jacket, not an alteration.
What custom varsity jackets cost
Varsity jackets are the most expensive garment we make, and the reason is construction rather than decoration. A wool-blend melton body with contrast sleeves, ribbed knit trim, a lining, and snap hardware is a genuinely complex garment, and that cost does not taper much with volume the way a printed tee does.
Chenille patches are priced per patch by size, and embroidered personalization adds a per-jacket charge because each one is a separate stitch-out. Those are worth knowing as separate lines when you set a budget, because a program can control them independently of the jacket itself: one patch and a name costs meaningfully less per jacket than three patches, a name, a year, and a sport title.
For a school running a jacket program as a paid option rather than a funded one, this is the item where a pre-sale genuinely matters. Collect commitments before you order, because you cannot resell a jacket with someone else's name on it.
Varsity jacket programs for schools and clubs
Most school varsity jacket programs run once a year against a deadline, usually tied to a senior season or a letter ceremony, and the deadline is the part that goes wrong. A jacket order takes longer than spirit wear, three to four weeks of production after approval, plus the time it takes to collect names and sizes, which is often the longer half. Start earlier than feels necessary.
Booster clubs frequently fund or subsidize these programs, and the mechanics of that are worth settling before you quote: whether the school issues a purchase order or the booster club pays directly changes the paperwork, not the price. Our booster club merch page covers how those orders are usually structured.
Student organizations and Greek chapters run the same programme on a smaller scale, often with chapter letters as the chenille patch and a member name and pledge year in embroidery. The student organization merch page covers the wider lineup those chapters order alongside jackets.
Related apparel
A varsity jacket is usually the top of a school program rather than the whole of it. Most orders that include jackets also include hoodies for the wider student body, which do the same identity job at a fraction of the price.
For a coaching or staff layer alongside a student jacket program, custom jackets are the more appropriate garment: lighter, functional outerwear rather than a keepsake.

Custom varsity jackets, frequently asked questions
Apparel is priced per piece and produced as a single made-to-order run, and the per-piece price steps down as the run grows: the published bands are read at 50, 100, and 250 or more. The reason is that the print or embroidery setup is a one-time cost divided across the whole order. Mix sizes freely within a run at no extra cost. Tell us your quantity in a quote request and we'll price that run.
Yes. Letterman and varsity jackets run as bulk orders produced in a single run, and the whole run can mix sizes and carry per-jacket names and years without splitting into separate orders. Tell us your quantity and we will confirm what is possible on your timeline.
Yes. Names, graduating years, and role or sport titles are embroidered per jacket, so a run of fifty can carry fifty different combinations. Send the list with your order and we will lay it out in the mockup so every spelling is checked before production. Names cannot change after production starts.
A chenille patch is the raised, looped-yarn letter or mascot on the chest of a traditional varsity jacket, usually in a school colour on a contrasting felt backing. It is the element that makes the jacket recognizable as a letterman jacket, and it is priced per patch by size.
About three to four weeks from approved mockup, longer than most apparel because the construction and the patch work are more involved. Add the time it takes to collect names and sizes from your group, which is usually the longer half. Tell us your ceremony or in-hand date and we will build a timeline backwards from it.
Yes. The body and contrast sleeves are specified separately, so most school colour combinations are achievable, and the chenille patch and embroidery thread are matched to your palette. Send us your colours with your quote request and we will confirm the exact match in your mockup before anything is cut.
You get an instant mockup, and a full quote by the next business morning. Production typically runs about two weeks from approved mockup to delivery, depending on quantity. Working to an event date? Tell us up front and we'll build a timeline that hits it.
A vector logo (AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF) gives the cleanest result, but a high-resolution PNG works too. Lay it out yourself in the Design Studio, or just send the file and we'll set up a free mockup for you. You approve exactly how it looks before production.
