Heavyweight cotton canvas is the workhorse: stiff enough to stand up on its own, thick enough to carry books or groceries without stretching at the handles, and the best surface of the three for a crisp screen print. Lighter cotton is thinner and softer, which makes it cheaper per piece and easier to fold flat for handing out at a conference. The trade-off is honest: it drapes rather than stands, and it will not take the same abuse. Choose it when the tote is a nice extra rather than the bag someone is meant to live with.

Recycled totes use post-consumer material, usually recycled cotton or rPET, and they are the right call when the order is for a sustainability program, an environmental nonprofit, or a brand whose buyers will ask.
