What are custom performance shirts?

Custom performance shirts are moisture-wicking polyester tees, often called dri-fit style, decorated by DTF or sublimation rather than standard screen print. Races, athletic teams, and outdoor work crews order them in bulk because they dry fast and stay presentable through a full day of activity.

About custom performance shirts

A performance shirt earns its place on one criterion: what it is like to wear ninety minutes into being uncomfortable. Cotton absorbs sweat and holds it, which is why a cotton race tee is heavy and cold at the finish line and why an outdoor crew in cotton looks worse at 2pm than at 8am. Polyester knit moves moisture to the surface and dries, which is the entire point.

We build custom performance shirts on lightweight moisture-wicking polyester with a smooth face that takes decoration well. The decoration method matters more here than on any cotton garment: standard plastisol screen printing sits as a non-breathable film on a technical fabric and undoes what you paid for, so we default to DTF or sublimation instead.

Race organizers order them as participant shirts, athletic programmes order them for training and warm-ups, and outdoor work crews order them for summer. Runs are produced as a single made-to-order batch with a free mockup before production.

Delivered per-unit pricing for custom performance shirts runs about $12–$20 at 50, $11–$17 at 100, and $9–$15 at 250 or more, with standard US shipping to one address included at every tier.

Best for

  • Race and marathon participant shirts
  • Athletic team training, warm-up, and practice kit
  • Outdoor work crews and summer field uniforms
  • Event staff shirts for outdoor festivals and community events

Performance polyester vs cotton

The difference is what the fabric does with sweat. Cotton fibres absorb it and hold it, so the shirt gets heavy, stays wet, and cools you uncomfortably once you stop moving. Polyester does not absorb: it wicks moisture along the fibre to the outer surface where it evaporates, so the shirt stays lighter and dries in a fraction of the time.

That is a genuine functional advantage for anyone moving, and a genuine disadvantage everywhere else. Polyester does not feel like cotton, it holds odour more readily, and it reads as sportswear rather than casual wear. If your shirt is going to be worn to a barbecue rather than a 10K, cotton is the better garment and our custom t-shirts page is the right page.

Blends split the difference: a poly-cotton or tri-blend keeps some of the wicking and most of the hand-feel, and it is often the right answer for a team shirt that gets worn both on and off the field. Tell us how the shirt will actually be used and we will recommend the fabric rather than the fashion.

Decoration options for performance fabric

DTF is our default. It lays full-colour artwork onto polyester with no per-colour setup, handles the fabric's smooth face well, and stays flexible rather than forming a stiff patch. For a race tee with a sponsor block or an event graphic it is usually both the best-looking and the most economical choice.

Sublimation is the premium option and the right one when you want edge-to-edge colour, panels, or a design that runs off the hem. Because it bonds into the fibre, there is nothing on the surface at all, so breathability is completely unaffected. It only works on polyester and it cannot print white, which are the two constraints to design around.

Standard plastisol screen printing is available but we will usually talk you out of it on a technical shirt. A large plastisol print is a sheet of non-breathable film across the chest of a garment bought specifically to breathe. If screen printing is right for your budget and quantity, a small chest mark is the sensible compromise rather than a full front.

What custom performance shirts cost in bulk

Performance shirts sit slightly above cotton tees per piece, and the gap narrows at volume. The blank costs more than a basic cotton tee but less than a heavyweight one, and the decoration methods that suit the fabric, DTF and sublimation, carry no per-colour screen setup, which changes the shape of the cost curve.

That has a useful consequence for race and event orders: a full-colour design with sponsor logos costs no more than a one-colour design, so there is no reason to strip a race tee back to a single ink. Budget instead on quantity, which is the lever that actually moves the number.

Performance shirts for races, teams, and crews

For races, the participant shirt is part of the entry fee and people judge the event by it. The two decisions that matter are fabric, because runners notice immediately, and sizing, because a race field skews differently from a team roster and you cannot re-order mid-event. Our races and marathons page covers how those orders are usually timed and sized.

For athletic programmes, performance shirts are the training layer under the competition jersey, and ordering them together on one run is worth doing: the same fabric and dye lot across both makes a programme look coherent in a way that separate orders rarely do.

For outdoor work crews, a wicking shirt is a genuine summer upgrade over a cotton tee and is usually worth the small premium. Keep the decoration small and light-coloured, because a large dark print on a shirt worn in direct sun holds heat exactly where you do not want it. Our custom work shirts page covers the wider crew lineup.

Related apparel

Performance shirts pair with team jerseys as the training layer under competition kit, and with joggers and hoodies as the warm-up layer over it.

For a shirt worn as much off the field as on it, custom t-shirts in cotton or a blend are usually the better call, and caps complete an outdoor crew or race lineup.

Custom performance shirts, frequently asked questions

Apparel is priced per piece and produced as a single made-to-order run, and the per-piece price steps down as the run grows: the published bands are read at 50, 100, and 250 or more. The reason is that the print or embroidery setup is a one-time cost divided across the whole order. Mix sizes freely within a run at no extra cost. Tell us your quantity in a quote request and we'll price that run.

Yes. They are moisture-wicking polyester knit, the fabric type usually described as dri-fit: it moves sweat to the surface where it evaporates rather than absorbing it, so the shirt stays lighter and dries far faster than cotton. Dri-FIT itself is a Nike trademark; ours is the same fabric category, not that brand.

We can, but we usually recommend against a large one. Standard plastisol sits as a non-breathable film on the fabric, which undoes what you bought the shirt for. DTF or sublimation are better matched to the material. If screen printing suits your budget, a small chest mark is the sensible compromise.

There is no quantity you have to reach. Order deeper than your registration count on the middle sizes: race sizing skews unpredictably and you cannot reorder mid-event. Tell us your field size and we will suggest a distribution.

They usually run slightly closer to the body, because the fabric has some stretch and the cut is often more athletic. Anyone between sizes should size up, and anyone who wants a relaxed fit should size up regardless. Share the size guide with your group before collecting sizes so everyone measures against the same chart.

Yes, and it costs no more than a single colour. DTF and sublimation both carry no per-colour setup charge, so a race tee with multiple sponsor logos prices the same as a plain one-colour design. There is no financial reason to strip the artwork back on this fabric.

You get an instant mockup, and a full quote by the next business morning. Production typically runs about two weeks from approved mockup to delivery, depending on quantity. Working to an event date? Tell us up front and we'll build a timeline that hits it.

A vector logo (AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF) gives the cleanest result, but a high-resolution PNG works too. Lay it out yourself in the Design Studio, or just send the file and we'll set up a free mockup for you. You approve exactly how it looks before production.
