Cotton, polyester, or blends: choosing custom shirt fabric

The fabric you choose decides how your shirts feel, how long they last, and how cleanly your logo prints — so it's worth getting right before you order.

When people order custom apparel, the conversation usually jumps straight to color and logo placement. But the fabric underneath is the decision that quietly shapes everything else — comfort, durability, how the print sits, and what the shirt costs. Cotton, polyester, and the blends in between each have a clear sweet spot. Here's how they differ, and how to match the fabric to the way your shirts will actually be worn.

100% cotton: soft, breathable, print-friendly

Cotton is the classic for a reason. It's soft against the skin, breathable, and the fabric most people reach for when they want a shirt that feels good to wear all day. It also takes a screen print beautifully — ink sits cleanly on natural fibers, colors stay true, and there's no risk of dye bleeding up from the fabric. If you want the softest possible hand feel, look for ring-spun or combed cotton, where the fibers are smoothed and twisted for a finer, more premium finish. The trade-offs: 100% cotton shrinks a little in the wash and wrinkles more easily than synthetic fabrics, so a tee that fit perfectly off the press may sit slightly closer after its first few washes.

Polyester and performance fabrics

Polyester is the workhorse of athletic and outdoor wear. It wicks moisture away from the body, dries fast, resists shrinking and wrinkling, and holds its shape through heavy use — which is why it's the default for team jerseys, running shirts, and anything worn while moving. It's also extremely durable. The catch is the print: polyester can be prone to dye migration, where the dye in the fabric lifts under heat and discolors the ink on top, especially on dark or brightly dyed shirts. That's not a dealbreaker — it just means the right print method matters. A poly-friendly approach keeps colors crisp and stops them from clouding over time.

Cotton-poly blends: the middle ground

For a lot of orders, a blend is the smart compromise. A classic 50/50 cotton-poly mixes the softness of cotton with the shrink-resistance and durability of polyester, so the fit stays consistent wash after wash. Tri-blends — cotton, polyester, and rayon — push even further toward a worn-in, vintage softness and a flattering drape that feels broken-in from day one. Blends hold color well, resist wrinkling, and forgive a lot, which makes them a great middle ground when you don't want to commit fully to the all-cotton or all-poly end of the spectrum. For most everyday company tees and giveaways, a blend hits the balance of comfort, longevity, and value that keeps people actually wearing them.

How fabric changes the print

Fabric and decoration method go hand in hand. Cotton is the friendliest surface there is — it takes both screen printing and direct-to-garment (DTG) printing exceptionally well, giving you bold solid colors or full-color, detailed artwork with a soft finish. Polyester needs a little more care: the right ink and a controlled process keep dye migration in check so your design stays clean. Blends usually print well across the board, leaning closer to cotton the more cotton they contain. The practical takeaway is to choose fabric and print method together rather than separately — once we know the fabric and the look you're after, the method follows naturally.

Matching fabric to how it's worn

The single most useful question is: where and how will these shirts live? For everyday office wear, soft retail-quality giveaways, and event tees people want to keep, cotton or a soft blend feels best and prints clean. For uniforms and workwear that get washed constantly, a blend's shrink-resistance keeps the fit reliable over the long haul. For anything athletic — 5K shirts, recreation leagues, outdoor crews — polyester earns its place with moisture wicking and toughness. If you're still deciding on the garment itself, our guide to choosing the right blank pairs naturally with this one, and our custom t-shirts come in a full XS–2XL size range so the whole team is covered.

A quick way to choose

  • Pick 100% cotton when softness and a clean, true-color print matter most — everyday tees, retail-feel giveaways, and event shirts people want to keep.
  • Pick polyester for athletic, outdoor, and high-wear use where moisture wicking and durability come first.
  • Pick a blend when you want the best of both — worn-in softness, shrink-resistance, and reliable fit for uniforms, workwear, and high-volume company merch.
