How to choose the right blank for custom apparel

The garment you print on matters more than the print itself. Here's how to read fabric weight, fit, and material so your branded apparel gets worn for years instead of stuffed in a drawer.

Every custom apparel order starts with a decision people rarely think about: the blank. The blank is the undecorated garment your logo goes on, and it does more to determine whether a shirt becomes a favorite than the artwork ever will. A great design on a thin, scratchy tee still ends up as a rag. A simple logo on a soft, well-cut heavyweight tee gets reached for every week. Get the blank right and the rest takes care of itself.

Start with fabric weight

Fabric weight is measured in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²) or grams per square meter (GSM), and it's the single best predictor of how a garment feels. For t-shirts, anything under about 4.5 oz is lightweight and often see-through; 5–6 oz is the heavyweight, premium range that drapes well and survives repeated washing. Hoodies and sweatshirts run heavier — a 8–10 oz fleece feels substantial, while budget 6 oz fleece can feel flimsy and pill quickly.

Heavier isn't always better — a midweight tee is more comfortable in summer than a thick one — but for branded merch that needs to read as premium, lean toward the higher end. The difference in cost per piece is usually small; the difference in perceived quality is large. Our custom apparel starts from heavyweight blanks for exactly this reason.

Cotton, blends, and performance fabrics

100% cotton is soft, breathable, and takes screen printing beautifully — the default for tees and a favorite for its natural hand. Ring-spun and combed cotton are softer still, because the fibers are twisted and cleaned for a smoother yarn. The trade-off is that cotton shrinks and wrinkles more.

Cotton-poly blends (often 50/50 or tri-blends with rayon) resist shrinking, drape with a worn-in softness, and hold color well — a great middle ground for everyday merch. Performance polyester wicks moisture and suits athletic or outdoor use, but needs the right print method to avoid dye migration. Match the fabric to how the garment will actually be worn.

Fit is half the battle

The best fabric in the world fails if the cut is wrong. Decide early whether you want a unisex/standard fit (roomy, easy, one run covers everyone) or retail/fitted cuts with separate men's and women's options (more flattering, more sizes to manage). For a giveaway where speed matters, unisex is simpler. For a team that will wear the garment often, offering fitted options shows you cared.

Whatever you choose, collect actual sizes rather than guessing. A shirt that doesn't fit is the fastest way to waste the whole gesture — and the budget. Every garment in our studio runs a full XS–2XL range, so you can mix sizes freely in one order.

Match the print method to the blank

Decoration and blank are a pair, not separate choices. Screen printing lays down vivid, durable ink and is the most cost-effective method at volume — ideal for bold logos and large front or back graphics on cotton. It has a per-color setup cost, so it shines when you're printing many of the same design.

Embroidery gives a premium, textured, long-lasting finish that's perfect for a left-chest logo on a polo, quarter-zip, or hoodie. It costs more per piece but reads as upscale, which is why it's the standard for corporate and client-facing apparel. Detailed, multi-color, or photographic artwork is usually better screen printed or handled with digital print.

A quick checklist before you order

  • Feel the weight. Aim for 5–6 oz on tees, 8 oz+ on fleece, for a premium hand.
  • Match fabric to use. Cotton for comfort, blends for durability, performance for athletic wear.
  • Decide the fit early. Unisex for speed, fitted for a team that'll wear it often.
  • Pair print to blank. Embroidery for premium left-chest, screen print for bold graphics at volume.
  • Collect real sizes. Never guess; mix sizes within one run.
