Why quantity is the biggest lever

The single largest factor in per-piece price is how many you order. That's because a lot of the cost in custom merch is setup, not the item itself — preparing screens, digitizing artwork for embroidery, and calibrating the run. Those costs are mostly fixed, so they spread thinner across every additional unit. Order 25 hoodies and the setup weighs heavily on each one; order 250 and it nearly disappears. This is why the price per piece drops as volume rises, and why ordering a sensible quantity often costs little more in total than a tiny run.

Most custom merch runs start around 25–50 units per item, which keeps per-piece pricing sensible while the decoration is set up. Screen printing has a setup cost per color, so a one-color logo is cheaper to set up than a four-color design — but once set up, it's very economical at volume. Embroidery is priced by stitch count rather than color, so a small left-chest logo is affordable while a large, dense design costs more. Neither is “better” — they suit different artwork and budgets. A practical money-saver: simplify artwork to fewer colors, or choose one placement instead of three.
